Back and neck pain are a common presenting problem at The Injury Clinic. There are a large number of different conditions which can affect the spine; and a number or different tissues that can be involved in back and neck pain.
Therefore effective management of back and neck pain requires a detailed assessment, accurate diagnosis, identification of contributing factors and an individualised treatment plan.
Common injuries or presentations of back and neck pain we see at The Injury Clinic include, but are not limited to:
Our physiotherapists will assess the spine, often looking at range of motion, motor control, strength and endurance. Furthermore, assessment of adjacent body sites may identify further possible contributing factors to the development of your symptoms.
A management plan for back and neck pain will be developed in collaboration with our patients. Short term management often includes trying to settle the affected site of injury or pain. This may be done with ergonomic advice, modification of current exercises or daily activity, soft tissue work, dry needling, home exercises (often targeting mobility and motor control) and taping.
Long term management is targeted towards not only restoring function, but also mitigating the risk of recurrence. This usually includes a progression of home based exercises or implementation of an individualised gym based strength & conditioning program. Referral and collaboration with other health care professionals may be indicated, as body weight, stress, sleep, nutrition and general health may influence the incidence, prognosis or rate of recurrence of certain causes of back and neck pain.
Physiotherapists at The Injury Clinic Physiotherapy are all qualified and experienced in the use of dry needling as a treatment technique. Dry needling may be suggested, or offered, as a treatment option in the management of your injury.
