COMMON SPORTING INJURIES

COMMON SPORTING INJURIES

At The Injury Clinic, our Geelong sports physio team regularly treat injuries sustained during all levels of sport, from a variety of different sporting codes. While the individual sports may be different, we do see certain injuries that are common across the board.

Working within a range of different sports allows our sports physios to have a varied skill set, while knowing the intricacies needed to return athletes to their chosen sport.

Common sporting injuries our physiotherapists see are:

TENDON INJURIES (ACHILLES / HAMSTRING / TIB POST / ADDUCTOR)

SOFT TISSUE INJURIES (HAMSTRING / CALF / QUAD)

BONE STRESS INJURIES (TIBIAL / METATARSAL / HIP / FEMUR / NAVICULAR)

JOINT INJURIES (SHOULDER / HIP / KNEE / ANKLE)

TYPES OF SPORTING INJURIES

SOFT TISSUE INJURIES

  • Muscle and tendon pain or tears (especially in the lower limb, such as hamstring or calf) are frequent during sport due to the high intensity running that is typically required
  • The time and rehab needed after these injuries is very dependent on the location and severity of the injury, and will require a progressive return back to training and matches; Our physiotherapists work closely with clients to ensure a well designed return to sport plan

JOINT INJURIES

  • Joint injuries tend to occur due to trauma, so they are more common in high speed or contact sports. These injuries range from:
    • Ligament injuries: ankle ligament injuries, ACL tears etc.
    • Joint dislocations: shoulder, finger and patella dislocations
    • Joint surface injuries: knee meniscus and shoulder/ hip labral injuries, tibial plateau fractures

SPINAL PAIN

  • It can be common to have pain through the spine during or as a result of sport, either from trauma or an increase in load through the spine. While these may feel difficult to manage, our physiotherapists have a range of treatment options to aid pain and recovery, and to return to sport as quickly as possible
  • We can typically see these types of injuries in sports that require high amounts of loading of the spine while in extension ie. cricket fast bowlers, gymnastics and rowing
