Groin Pain Geelong

Groin Pain

What is it?

There are many tissue structures that can contribute to the symptoms associated with groin pain. As a result, groin pain can be challenging to accurately diagnose.

Symptoms can be the result of injury to muscle, tendon or bone tissue. Or can be referred from other structures i.e. the hip joint. We must also give consideration to non-musculoskeletal causes such as hernias.

Symptoms commonly associated with Groin Pain

As there can be many different tissue and injury presentations involved in groin pain, the symptoms associated with groin pain vary greatly.

SYMPTOMS MAY INCLUDE:

  • Groin pain that is sharp, shooting, stabbing, dull, achey etc.
  • Pain in locations that can include your groin, front of hip,  inside the thigh etc.

SYMPTOMS MAY BE AGGRAVATED BY:

  • Functional tasks such as squatting, lifting, climbing stairs
  • Postures such as prolonged sitting or standing, driving
  • Sport and activity, such as: walking, running, kicking, and change in direction

Contributing Factors associated with Groin Pain

There are many factors that can contribute to the development of groin pain.

MODIFIABLE RISK FACTORS

– Altered biomechanics

– Muscle imbalances and strength deficits

– Poor motor patterning

– Changes in hip joint or pelvic loading

– Poor pelvic stability

– Load

– Demands of the sport i.e., change in direction

NON-MODIFIABLE

– Individual anatomical variations

– Past injury history

Considerations in the management of Groin Pain

SHORT TERM

DIAGNOSE

Diagnosis is a vital part of managing any injury. Not only is it important to determine which structures are responsible for our symptoms, but why they have become symptomatic. Addressing the ‘why’ will ensure adequate recovery and prevention of future injury. Our Geelong Physiotherapists will work with you to ensure an accurate diagnosis of your injury.

EDUCATION

It is important that you have an understanding of your diagnosis, and what strategies are important for acute management, and reduction of future injury risk

STRENGTH & MOTOR CONTROL

As a contributor to groin is often deficits in strength, endurance, stability, patterns of muscle activation etc., these need to be accurately assessed and improved

MANUAL THERAPIES

Manual therapies include: Soft tissue techniques, dry needling, joint mobilisation / manipulation etc.; these may be used to assist with symptoms

ACTIVITY MODIFICATION

You will often be advised to modify provocative activities to allow tissue recovery

LONG TERM

STRENGTHENING PROGRAM

You will likely be advised to continue with a strengthening program and progress this to a gym environment if it has been completed at home. This will allow us to address contributing factors such as core control, strength etc. and ensure you are in the best place to avoid injury recurrence.
