Heel Pain Geelong

Heel Pain

What is it?

Heel pain can be caused by a number of tissues, and there are a large number of structures that can contribute to heel pain. The source of the symptoms is often local, however symptoms can also be referred from tissues located away from the heel.

Symptoms commonly associated with Heel Pain

As there can be many different tissues that contribute to heel pain, symptoms can vary greatly. These may include:

  • Heel pain that is worse on the initiation of exercise, but then eases
  • Heel pain that is worst first thing in the morning
  • Heel pain that can be described as a dull ache, or sharp and burning
  • Heel pain that is triggered by a change in load
  • Heel pain that is worse in bare feet
  • Heel pain that is worse with activity and eases with rest
  • Heel pain that is sharp and shooting and associated with movement or stretching of other tissues

Contributing Factors associated with Heel Pain

MODIFIABLE RISK FACTORS

  • Change in activity or sport load
  • Change in footwear (i.e. changing shoes, increased time in bare feet
  • Body weight
  • Shoes nearing the end of their life and not protecting your foot as they once did
  • Calf strength
  • Calf length

NON-MODIFIABLE RISK FACTORS

– Bony anatomy

– Past injury history

Considerations in the management of Heel Pain

SHORT TERM

DIAGNOSE

Diagnosis is a vital part of managing any injury. Not only is it important to determine which structures are responsible for your symptoms, but why they have become symptomatic. Addressing the ‘why’ will ensure adequate recovery and prevention of future injury. Our Geelong Physiotherapists will work with you to ensure an accurate diagnosis of your injury.

STRENGTHENING

A rehabilitation program that targets the key contributing factors will fast track your return to pain free activity, and prevent future injuries. Your physio will design a program specific to you and your sport, for a successful return.

SOFT TISSUE TECHNIQUES AND DRY NEEDLING

These strategies can be beneficial in addressing muscle function and joint position

FOOTWEAR

Your physio will determine if footwear is a contributing factor, and may work with other health professionals such as podiatrists to address it properly. Taping techniques may also provide symptomatic relief.

REST AND LOAD MANAGEMENT

Initial rest from aggravating factors is important to reduce the inflammatory response of affected tissues. Your physio will guide your return to sport/activity to limit aggravation that can slow the rehab process.

LONG TERM

SHOCKWAVE

There is some evidence that shockwave may be effective in cases of persistent heel pain. This is dependent on tissue source.

STRENGTHENING

A progression of strengthening to a gym environment may be advised

REFERRAL

Referral for imaging or to other health practitioners such as podiatrists or sports physicians may be required.
