What is it?

There are many tissue structures that can contribute to the symptoms associated with hip pain.

As a result, accurate diagnosis of hip pain is important.

Hip pain can be the result of ligamentous, tendon, bony or connective tissue structures. 

 

** It should be noted that hip pain can also be either referred from other sources, such as your lower back and pelvis, and from non-musculoskeletal sources.

Symptoms commonly associated with Hip Pain

Symptoms associated with hip pain vary greatly.

They can be dependent on many factors, including the individual, tissue structures, pain mechanisms, aggravating factors etc. 

Symptoms may include:

  • Hip pain that is sharp, shooting, stabbing, dull, achey etc.
  • Pain locations can include: groin; front of hip; inside the thigh, knee

Symptoms may be aggravated by:

  • Functional tasks such as squatting, ascending stairs, running
  • Postures such as prolonged sitting or standing, driving
  • Sport and activity such as walking, running, kicking, change in direction

Contributing Factors associated with Hip Pain

MODIFIABLE RISK FACTORS

– Poor lower limb biomechanics (including foot)

– Muscle imbalances and strength deficits

– Poor motor patterning

– Changes in hip joint or pelvic loading

– Poor pelvic stability

– Load

– Sport

NON-MODIFIABLE RISK FACTORS

– Individual anatomical variations

– Past injury history

 

 

Considerations in the management of Hip Pain

SHORT TERM

DIAGNOSIS

Diagnosis is a vital part of managing any injury. Not only is it important to determine which structures are responsible for our symptoms, but why they have become symptomatic. Addressing the ‘why’ will ensure adequate recovery and prevention of future injury. Our Geelong Physiotherapists will work with you to ensure an accurate diagnosis of your injury. 

EDUCATION

It is important that you have an understanding of your diagnosis, and what strategies are important for acute management, and reduction of future injury risk.

STRENGTH & MOTOR CONTROL

Exercises may be given to help and improve the strength or activation of your hip muscles.

MANUAL THERAPIES

Manual therapies such as soft tissue techniques and dry needling may be used to help improve the health of the tissues around your hip.

ACTIVITY MODIFICATION

You may be advised to reduce activities that aggravate your hip pain to allow tissues an opportunity to rest and recover.

 

LONG TERM

STRENGTHENING

It may be advised that strengthening progress to a gym environment. This will ensure that tissues can be loaded appropriately, helping you to achieve best outcomes.

REFERRAL

Sometimes referral to other health practitioners such as GP, sports physician or an orthopaedic surgeon may be advised.
