The meniscus are cartilaginous discs that sit on the joint surface of the tibia.
We have two in each knee; the medial (on the inside) and lateral (on the outside) meniscus.
The role of the meniscus is to help stabilise the joint by deepening the articulation and to aid in shock absorption.
Unfortunately, the meniscus is susceptible to both degenerative and acute injuries.
When we damage our meniscus, it can result in knee pain and a loss of function.
Symptoms associated with knee pain due to an injury to the meniscus may include (but are not limited to):
– Load/activity ie. sport
– Motor patterning
– Strength
– Lower limb biomechanics
– Gender
– Individual anatomical differences ie. valgus angle of the knee
– Knee alignment
– Age
– Previous injury
– Degenerative changes
DIAGNOSE
Diagnosis is a vital part of managing any injury. Not only is it important to determine which structures are responsible for our symptoms, but why they have become symptomatic. Addressing the ‘why’ will ensure adequate recovery and prevention of future injury. Our Geelong Physiotherapists will work with you to ensure an accurate diagnosis of your injury.
EDUCATION
Education from a physiotherapist regarding diagnosis, aggravating factors and how to manage and prevent your injury is important to ensure an understanding of the management plan. This way appropriate decisions regarding returning to activity can be made, and best outcomes achieved.
STRENGTH & MOTOR CONTROL
Often improvements in motor control and lower limb biomechanics are needed. This can include exercises to address strength, endurance, stability, muscle activation etc.
MANUAL THERAPIES
Manual therapies include soft tissue techniques (massage), dry needling etc., these may be used to help address the health of the tissues surrounding the knee joint.
ACTIVITY MODIFICATION
It is likely that you will be advised to avoid aggravating activities, and that provocative tasks initially be avoided to allow improvements in tissue health and inflammation.
STRENGTHENING
A progression of strengthening to a gym environment is often advised. This will ensure your legs are strengthened and your muscles are better able to attenuate the load around your knee.
REFERRAL
Referral for imaging, or to an orthopaedic surgeon may be advised if conservative management fails.
