Myofascial pain is extremely common and can be defined as a regional pain with a soft tissue origin (ie. muscle or fascia/connective tissue). Myofascial trigger points are a common cause of neck pain. A myofascial trigger point is a hyperirritable spot (that often feels like a knot) which can be the cause of your pain and reproduce your symptoms.
There are many factors that can contribute to the development of neck pain, these may include (but are not limited to):
DIAGNOSE
Diagnosis is a vital part of managing any injury. Not only is it important to determine which structures are responsible for our symptoms, but why they have become symptomatic. Addressing the ‘why’ will ensure adequate recovery and prevention of future injury. Our Geelong Physiotherapists will work with you to ensure an accurate diagnosis of your injury.
EDUCATION
It is important that you have an understanding of your diagnosis, and what strategies are important for acute management, and reduction of future injury risk.
MOTOR CONTROL
Strength of postural muscles and motor control is a common contributor to neck pain. It may be suggested that you commence exercises to improve your strength and motor control. This will help improve the tolerance of your muscle to load.
MANUAL THERAPIES
These can include soft tissue techniques, dry needling, joint mobilisation / manipulation etc. These strategies are often used in the short term to help with symptom management.
ACTIVITY MODIFICATION
It will often be advised that you avoid provocative activities, or positions where possible. This may include adjustments to work set-ups, gym programs or resting positions.
STRENGTHENING
A progression of your strengthening into a gym environment is often advised, as improving the capacity or your tissues will help improve their tolerance to load and therefore your symptoms. It is a vital part of longer term management to reduce your risk of experiencing issues in the future.
