YOUTH DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT AT THE INJURY CLINIC

The Injury Clinic Physiotherapists and Strength and Conditioning Coaches have designed a Youth Development School Holiday Program that aims to introduce and expose kids aged 12 to 16 years to a sport and skill specific exercise program.

We have become aware of the growing number of adolescents expressing interest in strength and resistance training and have noticed frequent mistakes in generic training programs.

The aim of the program is to help provide education, guidance and opportunities through a variety of gym based and exercise specific techniques that can improve performance and minimise the risk of injury!

Parents and Coaches are highly encouraged to attend and participate in the sessions to optimise their understanding and knowledge regarding youth training and development.

So why is this important?

Early sport specialisation (intensive prepubertal participation in a single sport for more than 8 months of a year at the expense of other sports) has been associated with a significantly increased risk of overuse injury including bone stress injuries.

Throughout these ages and puberty it is crucial to load our bones as it provides a once in a lifetime opportunity to optimise bone size and health. However, whilst loading and training is essential, it is important that gym programs are conducted in a specific and programmed manner to avoid the risk of injury.

This program is centred around educating adolescents to prevent common mistakes and avoid the negative effects we have seen from early sport specialisation in the past by providing a specifically designed program delivered by our team.

Each session will involve a Strength and Conditioning Coach who specialises on prescribing specifically individualise exercise and gym programs as well as a Physiotherapist.

Through structuring the program in this manner, we aim to provide an opportunity for the kids, parents and coaches to optimise their injury prevention knowledge to best support youth development!

How it will run and what to expect:

Each session will consist of various exercises. There will be up to three levels of each specific exercise to cater for participants who have already begun their gym journey and for those that are new to this form of training.

This way, no matter the level of experience, everyone will be able to participate in challenging exercises and drills and gain valuable skills adaptations.

Keeping in mind, each session is closely supervised by our team and conducted in a safe manner.
