POST PARTUM APPOINTMENT

WHAT TO EXPECT

At The Injury Clinic, we have a special interest in working with postpartum women. We believe that once a woman has had a child, she is always postpartum and there are often special considerations that need to be made. Whether your goal is to return to running, or restore normal muscle function postpartum, we would love to be a part of your rehabilitation process.

During your initial appointment, you are likely to be asked a series of questions, some of which may seem slightly intrusive or personal (some of these questions are listed below). These questions help us gain an insight into any potential problems and assess where your baseline may be. It is, however, important to remember:

1. We are physiotherapists with a special interest in working with women on their postpartum journey. We do not have a Women’s Health physiotherapist working at the clinic. While we may be able to help with pelvic floor exercises, we commonly encourage you to see a Women’s Health physiotherapist to ensure you get the best possible outcome. We work closely with several Women’s Health physiotherapists in Geelong, and are happy to refer you on to someone who will be able to give you a more specialist pelvic floor assessment and management plan.

2. During your initial appointment we may ask questions around:

  • Any injury concerns you have (past or present),
  • Any pain, discomfort or concerns you may have,
  • Your labour and any complications you may or may not have had,
  • Your breastfeeding journey (if you have chosen to breastfeed),
  • Your goals and what you are hoping to achieve through your appointments with your physiotherapist,
  • Your abdominal strength and control. This includes assessment of your diastasis recti (abdominal separation) if appropriate.

3. We will work together to establish a plan to achieve the outcome and goals you have. This can, at times, involve other members of the team at The Injury Clinic (for example our Strength and Conditioning coach) or external providers (for example, a Women’s Health physio) to achieve the best possible outcome.

If you have any concerns leading into your post partum physiotherapy appointment, please feel free to email the clinic (info@theinjuryclinic.com.au) and your email will be forwarded onto your physiotherapist.
